Michelin slows Indian truck tyre plant over Untouchable row - allegedly
ERJ staff report (DS)
Tamil Nadu, India - Michelin is reportedly easing its construction programme in India, following a row over a group of local people, classed as 'untouchables'. A French Human Rights group called CCFD-Terre Solidaire said the company's investments in Tamil Nadu infringe the rights of a group of Dalit people close to the village of Thervoy, Tamil Nadu
CCFD said the Dalit (or 'untouchable' caste), are protected in law. It added that the people have been living in the same area for over 200 years. It added that Michelin acquired land from the Tamil Nadu government in November 2009. CCFD alleges that the Tamil Nadu Government did not consult with the Dalit people before selling the land.
CCFD calls on Michelin to uphold its strong record of social responsibility and suspend further construction work at the site until all legal proceedings are concluded.
A local press report said Michelin has made some concessions, including restricting some aspects of construction work at the plant.
