India begins tapping root-trained rubber plants
ERJ staff report (DS)
Kottatam, India -- Rubber seedlings planted in 2005, and developed using a new technique designed to develop a strong root system, are now ready to be tapped commercially.
Smt. Sheela Thomas, Chairman, Rubber Board will inaugurate the tapping of rubber plants raised through root trainer technique, at the holding of Sri. V.N. Krishnapillai (Valliyedathu, Panicheppally, Kanjirappally) at 2.00 pm on 06 January 2012. Dr. N. Jayaraj, MLA will inaugurate the meeting in connection with this, and Dr. J. Thomas, Rubber Production Commissioner will preside over the function.
Raising of root trainer rubber plants is a modern technique developed by the Rubber Research Institute of India. In this method, plants are grown in specially designed plastic cups called 'root trainers'. Development of a healthy root system comprising straight and deep growing tap root and profuse lateral roots is the main feature of root trainer plants.
