Koppers to close Australian carbon black plant

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- Koppers Holding is closing its sole carbon black plant, located in Kurnell, New South Wales, Australia. Manufacturing operations wil cease this week, with all 65 employees losing their jobs over the next four months. The unit operates under the name of Continental Carbon Australia Pty Ltd.
The company said the decision, "was made as a result of a detailed analysis of the manufacturing assets in light of deteriorating operating conditions including raw material availability and cost, competition in export markets due to the strength of the Australian dollar, and a variety of other factors."
All tyre manufacuring operations in Australia have ceased in recent years, and this has affected local demand.
