EU truck tyre sales ground to a halt in September

Paris -- Michelin reports that European replacement sales of truck tyres went into a sharp reverse in September. Most other markets remained trong, with the exception of Brazilian car tyres.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia, but the data shows continued growth. Data is given for September, and for the year to date, which covers the first nine months of 2011.
In truck tyre markets, Europe's growth in the OE market is continues to slow, with growth in the year to date of of 48.2 percent, though year-on-year growth in September was lower, at 20.9 percent. On the replacement side, growth in the first nine months of 1o.3 percent concealed a sharp decline ith the September figure down by 11.8 percent, increasing te 3.3 percent decline seen in August.
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow at an astonishing rate -- the year to date has seen an increase of 59.6 percent and the pace of growth continued with growth of 67.7 percent in the month of September. Replacement sales were up by 10.0 percent in the year to date and by 6.2 percent in the month of September. In Brazil, OE sales rose by 20.3 percent in the first nine months, and the growth rate slowed to 16.0 percent in September, while replacement sales were up by 10.5 percent in the year to date and up by 3.3 percent in September.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets showed almost universal growth. Europe showed growth of 7.7 percent in the OE market for the first nine months, slowing to just 0.6 percent in September. On the replacement side, growth in the year to date was 8.4 percent, easing toan increase of just 2.5 percent in September.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 6.3 percent in the year to date and by 9.1 percent in September, while replacement sales were essentially flat in the year to date, but up by 0.4 percent in September. In Brazil, OE sales rose by 6.1 percent in the year to date but reversed to a decline of 4.1 percent in the most recent month. Replacement sales were up by 4.8 percent over the nine months and by 5.4 percent in September.
