ERJ staff report (DS)
Tokyo -- Bridgestone Corp. reported a profit for the first nine months of 2010. Sales for the three quarters were up by 11.6 to yen 2091 billion (euro 18 255 million) from yen 1874 billion a year ago. Net income was yen 66.8 billion (euro 583 million), compared with a net loss of yen 27.5 billion a year ago.
In the tyre segment, Bridgestone reported operating profits of yen 104 billion on sales of yen 1731 billion.
The diversified products segment saw operating profits of yen 9.4 million on sales of yen 369 billion.
In Japan, unit sales of tyres increased over the first three quarters of 2009, due to the recovery in demand. In the Americas, unit sales of cars and trucks increased strongly, so tyre sales also increased.
In Bridgestone's supplementary data it noted that sales of runflat tyres and UHP tyres decreased in the third quarter compared to the first half of 2010. Sales of Winter tyres, however, increased. Bridgestone said sales of mid-range off-road tyres rocketed, from an index of 105 in the first half to 160 in the third quarter.
