Wind turbine seals from ECO instead of NBR
ERJ staff report (DS)
Nuremberg, Germany -- Otto Haas KG in Nuremberg is now using epichlorohydrin elastomers (ECO) in place of nitrile rubber for the seals that secure blades in offshore wind turbines.
The sea is a hostile environment for wind turbines, wearing down their parts with salt water and high shaft speeds. The cost and effort to replace these components is high.
Thomas Haas, the managing director of Otto Haas said, "By using Hydrin rather than an NBR, we are able to double the life expectancy and increase the performance of the turbines' seals,â€
Haas bought the ECO material from Zeon Chemicals, which sells the material under the Hydrin brand name.
