ETRMA says 91 percent of all EU tyres recycled
ERJ staff report (DS)
Brussels -- In 2007, close to 3.4 million tons of used tyres were generated in the enlarged Europe, said ETRMA in a report. Of these, close to 91 percent were either burned for energy, or crumbed or otherwise recycled. A year ago the figure was 87 percent.
The 91 percent recycling rate puts the EU at the top of the tree in terms of tyre recycling, and compares with for example Japan (89%) or Canada (80 %).
While retreading remains unchanged (12 percent) and energy recovery has stabilised at around 32 percent, the ban on landfill has resulted in a rapid increase in material recycling which now takes nearly 39 percent of the total: a rise of 25 percent over a decade.
