Conti breaks ground on Hefei tyre plant

Hefei, China, -- Continental held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new car tyre plant in China on October 10, 2008. Located in Hefei New and High Technology Industrial Development Zone, this new plant features the first phase project of around 70,000 square meters of constructional area, which is the first factory investment of Continental's PLT Division in China, and the largest Foreign Direct Investment project of Anhui Province so far.
“Continental produces about 120 million tyres a year worldwide. We will invest around 185 million Euros in the Hefei plant, which is scheduled to be completed by 2010. We are aiming for an annual production of four million PLT tyres here in Hefei in the first step. In the long run our capacity should exceed ten million tyres a year by farâ€, Wente said. “This will be a next step forward to achieve our goal of strengthening our Asian businessâ€, he explained.
This is Conti's first tyre factory in China, although it operates 18 factories for other goods on the People's Republic.
