Bridgestone looks at recycled carbon black
ERJ staff report (DS)
Akron, Ohio -- Bridgestone Firestone is said to be looking at the possibility of using recycled carbon black in the US. A tyre recycling company, Alliance, said its representatives expect in late May to visit Bridgestone-Firestone's Technical Center in Akron to discuss the use of its carbon black in Bridgestone Firestone rubber formulations.
Alliance extracts the oil from tyres, which is used then burned to make power. A by-product if this process is a carbon powder. Alliance said says it makes a commercial grade of carbon black which can be used in rubber compounds. Alliance said its commercial grades of carbon black sell in the range of $.55/ pound to $.70/ pound in the US. European market prices are significantly higher.
