MARGMA-Monash University collaboration to include specialised master’s programme, industry training
Selangor, Malaysia – The Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) and Monash University Malaysia have signed an MoU to strengthen talent development, research collaboration and innovation within Malaysia’s rubber glove sector.
The agreement aims to link academic research with industry needs by developing specialised education programmes and workforce upskilling initiatives, said MARGMA 12 March.
The partnership will also establish “a structured talent pipeline” to support the long-term development of technical expertise in the industry and address a shortage of specialised skills within the sector.
“While Malaysia leads the world in glove production, more than 80% of R&D roles in this sector are currently filled by non-specialists,” said MARGMA president Oon Kim Hung.
“This initiative is designed to help close that gap and build deeper technical expertise within the industry.”
The first initiative under the collaboration will be the development of a specialised master’s degree programme in colloids and latex technology, targeted at engineers and professionals working in the glove manufacturing ecosystem.
The programme will cover topics including colloid science, latex technology, nanotechnology, applied artificial intelligence, industrial statistics and sustainable manufacturing.
Beyond education, the agreement includes several “high impact initiatives” designed to strengthen collaboration between academia and manufacturers.
These include an industry-led curriculum framework, joint executive training programmes and professional workshops aimed at upskilling engineers and technologists working in the sector.
Students enrolled in the programme will also complete industrial placements and final-year research projects within MARGMA member companies.
According to MARGMA, Malaysia remains the world’s leading producer and exporter of rubber gloves, with export earnings reaching about RM14 billion in 2025 (€3.1 billion).
