Lanxess to move Sarnia R&D to Western Ontario University
London, Ontario Canada - Lanxess is moving its Canadian research activities to the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in London, Ontario.Â
One of the tenants announced by UWO for a new building is speciality chemicals manufacturer Lanxess Inc. UWO said the Lanxess research centre will move into the research park when the new building is completed in the autumn of 2009.
“Our company looked for a location linked with a leading research-intensive university," said Ralf Schenkel, head of Global Research & Development for butyl rubber in a press release from UWO. He added, “This site was chosen as it combines a unique culture of innovation with access to cutting-edge research. This is a significant commitment by Lanxess to innovation and growth in butyl manufacturing in Canada and globally.â€
Local press reports suggested virtually all research and development at Lanxess will move to the new site, uprooting about 50 employees. Reports also suggested Lanxess chose London because of its proximity to Lanxess' manufacturing site in  Sarnia.
Last February, Lanxess announced its new butyl rubber manufacturing facility, its largest investment ever, would be built in Singapore. That same month, the company announced it would close a Sarnia plant to consolidate its nitrile-butadiene production in France.
Nobody at Lanxess was available to comment.
