China passes Japan to become second-largest vehicle market
Detroit, Michigan - China passed Japan in 2006 as the second-largest vehicle market, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said. Sales in China, including trucks and buses, jumped 25.1 percent to 7.2 million vehicles in 2006. Light-vehicle sales totaled 3.8 million.
Japan's sales last year totaled 5.7 million units, said the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. In the US, 2006 sales totaled 17.1 million, including 16.6 million light vehicles.
