AKRON (Dec. 22)--Smithers Scientific Services Inc. has received a $400,000 contract from the California Energy Commission to study tire characteristics as they relate to rolling resistance.
The study potentially will serve as the basis for a fuel efficiency reporting system and minimum-efficiency standards, Smithers said. The investigation will cover tire rolling resistance, traction and treadwear testing.
The study is expected to take 18 months to complete. Rolling resistance testing will be conducted at the firm's indoor tire testing laboratories in Ravenna, Ohio.
