Battery-electric vehicle market share rises to 22.7% from 16.1% reported in first nine months of 2025
Brussels – The new EU passenger car market performed strongly in the month of September, with demand rising 9.3% year-on-year to 971,048 units, according to data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
Over the first nine months, the market rose 5.7% to 8,517,059 units, “despite a challenging macroeconomic environment marked by persistently rising energy prices and geopolitical headwinds,” ACEA said 22 Oct.
Demand for a range of electrified vehicles remained strong, particularly in major European markets, supported by buyer support measures and a broader model offering.
Up until September 2026, battery-electric cars secured a 22.7% share of the EU market, up from 16.1% a year earlier.
Hybrid-electric car registrations captured 36.3% of the market, remaining the preferred choice among EU consumers.
At the same time, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 28.2%, compared with 36.9% a year earlier.
