US supplier completes industry LCA methodology as it reports progress on sustainability targets
Boston, Massachusetts – Cabot Corp. has completed work on an industry-wide life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology for furnace carbon black and plans to develop a certified tool to calculate product carbon footprints (PCFs) across its portfolio.
The development, announced as part of Cabot's 2026 sustainability report, follows a collaborative initiative with the International Carbon Black Association (ICBA) and supports the company's 2030 sustainability goals.
Building on the new methodology, Cabot said it plans to create "a proprietary, externally certified tool" to track product carbon footprints across its product portfolio, aimed at improving "transparency, accuracy and credibility."
The carbon black producer also reported that it met 14 of its 15 sustainability goals for 2025, with 11 achieved ahead of schedule.
Among other milestones, Cabot said it had established a beneficial reuse route for synthetic gypsum generated at its Franklin, Louisiana facility, reducing non-hazardous landfill waste at the site by 87%.
The process contributed to a 70% reduction in non-hazardous waste sent to landfill globally between 2024 and 2025.
According to Cabot sustainability chief Jennifer Chittick, the company is making "measurable progress" towards its 2030 sustainability targets through initiatives designed to reduce its environmental footprint and strengthen performance across its value chain.
