Existing investor leads Series B participation as demo plant moves towards commissioning in 2026
Seoul – HS Hyosung Advanced Materials is increasing its investment in US-based Trillium Renewable Chemicals as the company’s bio-based acrylonitrile technology enters the demonstration phase.
In a 6 May statement, Hyosung said it has been an investor in Trillium since 2022 and is now participating as lead investor in the company’s $13 million (€11 million) Series B funding round, alongside Belgium-based Capricorn Partners.
The funding will support operation of the demonstration plant, further process development and engineering work for a planned commercial-scale facility.
The fund raising round followed Trillium's completion of its "project falcon," described as “the world’s first glycerol-based bio-acrylonitrile demonstration plant.”
The facility was completed in February and is scheduled to begin commissioning in the second quarter of 2026, with product shipments expected in the second half of the year.
Acrylonitrile is a key raw material used in synthetic rubbers and high-performance polymers, and is also an input in carbon fibre production for Hyosung Advanced Materials.
Trillium’s process uses waste glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel production, as a feedstock intended to replace conventional petrochemical-based inputs.
