Ukraine claims attack on Tatneft synthetic rubber plant

Kiev - Ukrainian defence forces have claimed an attack on a major synthetic rubber plant owned by Tatneft in Togliatti, Samara Oblast, southwest Russia.

In an official announcement, the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces said the attack was carried out 12 Sept and was “followed by a fire.”

Previously owned by Sibur, the Togliatti facility was acquired in 2019 by Tatneft.

Sibur linked to sale to the group's increased focus on “polymers with global capacities” while Tatneft was looking to support its activities, at the time, in the tire industry.

In 2021, Tatneft signed a licensing and engineering agreement with Versalis for the construction of two additional rubber production plants at the Togliatti site.

The units were designed to produce 70ktpa of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and 30ktpa of carboxylate SBR latices. (ERJ report)

Currently, Togliatti has capacity to produce 100ktpa of isoprene rubber, 60ktpa of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), and 75ktpa of butyl rubber, according to Tatneft’s website.

The site can also produce 90ktpa of isoprene, 120ktpa of butadiene, 39ktpa of ‘high-octane’ gasoline additives, 165ktpa of isobutylene-isobutane fraction and 60ktpa of isobutylene.
