Partnership with Sanctuary AI to focus on durable, high-precision components for robotic hands used in industrial settings
Tokyo – Japan’s Zeon Corp. has invested in Canadian robotics startup Sanctuary AI and entered a partnership to develop specialised elastomeric materials for dexterous humanoid robots.
Vancouver-based Sanctuary AI is developing general-purpose humanoid robots capable of performing complex industrial labour, said Zeon in a 26 May statement.
The company’s robotic hand technology combines miniaturised hydraulic actuators with "high-fidelity tactile sensing" to replicate “human-level dexterity” and provide the strength, speed and sub-millimetre precision required for industrial tasks.
Under the partnership, Zeon and Sanctuary AI will collaborate on elastomeric components for robotic hands designed for use in factory and industrial environments.
Zeon said the transition of dexterous robotics from laboratory development to factory deployment will require "resilient materials that balance industrial-grade toughness with the tactile precision of human touch."
As Sanctuary AI moves towards commercialisation, Zeon Group will contribute its elastomer materials expertise together with its testing and evaluation capabilities to support product development.
According to Zeon, wider deployment of dexterous robotic systems could help address labour shortages and support ageing societies by improving industrial productivity and automation.
The investment also supports Zeon’s STAGE30 medium-term business plan, under which the group aims to increase the contribution of its four growth areas — mobility, healthcare & life science, telecommunications and GX — to 48% of total sales by fiscal 2028.
