Modular design uses “advanced material innovation” for headrest and armrest
Seoul – Hyundai Transys and BASF have developed a modular concept seat for purpose-built vehicles (PBVs), incorporating BASF’s thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) processed with supercritical fluid (SCF) injection foaming technology.
The system uses BASF’s Elastollan TPU to support "customisable, lightweight and more sustainable" seating concepts for future automotive interiors, said BASF 5 Nov.
Originally adopted in footwear, the material enables lightweight, abrasion-resistant components with a “soft-touch feel and premium look.”
BASF said the SCF process evenly disperses gas to create a fine-cell foam structure, improving mechanical performance, reducing density and lowering VOC emissions.
No crosslinkers or chemical blowing agents are required, enabling post-consumer recyclability “with easy disassembly and reuse,” BASF added.
This, the supplier said, supports compliance with the EU’s proposed end-of-life vehicle regulation, which emphasises circular design.
BASF also said the process reduces energy demand during production, helping manufacturers meet carbon-reduction and neutrality targets.
The concept, according to BASF, is 'the first in the industry' to feature a headrest and armrest made with the advanced material.
