Helsinki – Finland-based forest industry and bio-chemical company UPM has joined the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic), with the aim to strengthen the role of renewable chemistry in the region.
In a 6 Oct statement, the company said renewable chemistry was “an integral part of a competitive and sustainable” chemical industry.
Stressing that the segment was “vital” for the region’s prosperity and technological leadership, UPM EVP Harald Dialer said the company was "determined to help secure a strong, innovative and sustainable European chemical industry.
Welcoming UPM to Cefic, director general Marco Mensink said bio-based chemistry was key to achieving climate neutrality while driving innovation.
UPM’s membership in Cefic is part of the company's effort to transform from a forest industry company into a player in the European chemical landscape.
The company has recently started commercial-scale production at its “state-of-the-art” biorefinery in Leuna, Germany, where it produces wood-based biochemicals for packaging, textiles, and automotive applications. (ERJ report)
