EPDM, FKM and PFA compounds designed to improve efficiency and chemical resistance
Trelleborg, Sweden – Trelleborg Sealing Solutions (TSS) has launched a new range of sealing materials developed for use in electric vehicle (EV) battery cells.
The CellXPro portfolio includes EPDM, FKM and PFA compounds, along with 'specialist formulations' tailored to the requirements of battery cell housings, TSS announced in a 28 May statement.
The materials, according to TSS, are designed to meet high operational demands and offer improved chemical compatibility with electrolytes.
According to the company, a critical factor for battery efficiency and longevity is the quality of cell components, especially the seals within the cell housing.
Chemical interactions between the sealing material and the electrolyte can alter the chemical composition and decrease cell performance and battery service life.
“Leveraging our experience, innovative R&D developments and advanced testing protocols, we launched the [new] portfolio,” explained Marc Gay, sales development engineer.
The range, he added, positions Trelleborg as “the sealing partner of choice” for battery manufacturers.
According to Gay, TSS also supports battery manufacturers with material selection and testing for EV-specific requirements.
In addition to sealing materials, Trelleborg said it also provides thermoplastic cell insulators as standalone parts or as multi components.
The multi-component technology enables part count reduction as the electrical isolation and functional seal are manufactured as a single part made of elastomer bonded to the plastics insulator.
Trelleborg said it produces the insulator cells “in very large quantities using highly automated production lines.”
