Unit supplies silicones as well as functional materials such as vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, liquid fluoroelastomers
Tokyo - Shin-Etsu’s functional materials segment has posted a 26% year-on-year increase in net sales for the nine months to December 2021 to Yen289.1 billion (€2,236 million).
Segment operating profit, meanwhile, increased 33% to Yen683 billion, according to the Japanese chemical group’s third quarter results issued 28 Jan.
The functional materials unit, it said, faced a sharp rise in prices for silicon metal, its man raw material, while procurement and shipping were impacted by "turmoil" in global logistics.
In response, Shin-Etsu focused on increasing sales and raising product prices, a strategy that led to higher revenues and earnings.
As well as silicones, Shin-Etsu’s functional materials portfolio includes cellulostic derivatives, synthetic pheromones, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers and liquid fluoroelastomers.
