Factories in Changshu and Hunan transition to 100% renewable energy as group targets 'full carbon neutrality' by 2050
Kobe, Japan – Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has progressed its decarbonisation efforts with the supply of green energy to tire production factories in China.
The two sites, based in Changshu and Hunan, started purchasing 100% of their electric power from renewable energy sources in January, said SRI in an 18 Jan statement.
With further plans to instal solar power generators from the second half of the year, the two factories are slated to reduce their total annual CO2 emissions from tire manufacturing processes by an estimated 70% compared to 2021.
Operational since 2004, the Changshu factory in eastern China manufactures 7,200 tonnes per month of passenger car, light truck as well as truck & bus tires per month.
Based in the central province of Hunan, Sumitomo Rubber Hunan, has been operational since 2012 and produces just under 3,000 tonnes of passenger car and light truck tires per month.
The transition to green energy is part of SRI’s long-term sustainability strategy which aims to reduce total CO2 emissions at all of the group factories worldwide by 50% by 2030 compared to the 2017 baseline.
The group aims to achieve ‘full carbon neutrality’ by the year 2050.
