Clermont Ferrand, France-A research seminar on parasites that attack Hevea Brasiliensis was held in Bahia, Brazil, 4-6 May. Michelin, which hosted the event, claims it was the world's first such seminar.
The three-day seminar focused on the Microcyclus ulei fungus, which causes South American tree blight (SALB) in hevea trees.
Michelin and its partners, the Center for International Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development (CIRAD) and the International Rubber Research and Development Board (IRRDB), invited 80 scientists from ten different countries to discuss the future of natural rubber cultivation. Michelin presented the results of its research program initiated in 1992 in partnership with the CIRAD to combat Microcyclus and to develop hevea clones resistant to the fungus.
