FIA clears 'Michelin seven'
Paris--The FIA has cleared the seven Michelin-shod teams of any wrongdoing at the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis last month. Earlier the FIA had found the teams guilty of two charges: failing to ensure that they were in possession of suitable tyres for the 2005 US Grand Prix and wrongfully refusing to allow their cars to start the race.
The climb-down follws an appeal from the seven teams in which they cited an Indiana law that prohibits activities which may lead to an accident, even if an accident does not occur. The FIA accepted the teams' argument that that they could not race against the instructions of Michelin, and were contractually obliged to stand down. The FIA, equally, could not change the licensed configuration of the Indianapolis circuit in order to allow the teams to run.
