Gevo wins EPA approval for bio-isobutanol
ERJ staff report (DS)
Englewood, California -- -Gevo, Inc.said its isobutanol had successfully cleared registration with the US EPA as a fuel additive. Gevo's isobutanol is the first isobutanol to be listed in the EPA's Fuel Registration Directory and is now approved for blending with gasoline.
Gevo's isobutanol is produced from renewable resources using genetically-modified micro-organisms and can be used as a gasoline and jet fuel blendstock, and through conversion into plastics, fibers, rubber and other polymers.
In May this year, Lanxess AG invested $10 million in Gevo with the specific aim to find an alternative route to source isobutene - a key raw material needed in the manufacturing of butyl rubber. Gevo is developing a fermentation process to produce the organic compound isobutanol from the fermentable sugars in biomass, starting with corn. Isobutanol is a fundamental building block for making biodiesel, bio jet fuel as well as plastics, rubber and fibers.
