Conti outlines Winter tyre legislation across Europe
ERJ staff report (DS)
Hannover, Germany -- Continental has published a summary of Winter tyre legislation across Europe, noting that there are no Europe-wide regulations for winter tyres in sight.
The company notes the definition of a Winter tyre published in EU document 92/23 EEC, Amendment II published in 1992, and says, "Based on this definition, today's winter tyres really aren't winter tyres at all."
In particular, Conti highlights the lack of reference to compound material in the EU definition. Since 1992, tyre makers have developed much more sophisticated compounds, which are designed specifically to deliver good performance at temperatures around freezing and on snow, ice and cold water.
Conti's summary refers to the following countries: Austria; Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg; CzechRepublic; Denmark; Estonia; Finland; France; Germany; Italy; Latvia; Lithuania; Norway; Poland; Romania; Slovakia; Slovenia; Sweden; and Switzerland. The UK and Ireland are conspicuously absent from the listing.
