ETRMA reports on end-of-life tyres
ERJ staff report (DS)
Brussels -- The 2010 edition of ETRMA's End-of-life tyres Management brochure features the latest achievements in terms of end-of-life tyres recovery in Europe.
The report notes establishment of industry standards for ELT derived products under the aegis of CEN TC266 contributes to the credibility of tyre derived applications and to a significant increase of the level of quality of tyre derived products while opening the market to new applications, promoting technology exchanges and access to know-how and innovation. These efforts should lead to further develop the use of ELTs in applications such as rubberised asphalt in road construction, which offers high growth potential in Europe but which is definitely under-used;
It also says the recently conducted Life cycle assessments (LCAs) demonstrate that under present conditions, the recovery methods provide net environmental benefits, regardless of the environmental impact considered. Hence the recovery routes for ELTs are both economically and environmentally relevant;
In a third point, ETRMA comments, the favourable positioning of tyre derived fuel in substituting other traditional solid fuels in terms of net calorific value and emissions and the positive contribution of ELTs towards reducing CO2 emissions declarations of the cement industry thanks to its biomass fraction.
