Milan, Italy – Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is claiming an industry first by adopting 70% sustainable tires from Pirelli: starting with selected Range Rover models later this year.
The new Pirelli P Zero tire, developed specifically for JLR, includes materials such as rice husk-derived silica, recycled steel, and FSC-certified natural rubber, said Pirelli and JLR in separate statements 10 July.
Pirelli described the tire as its “first standard production tire for the global market made with over 70% bio-based and recycled materials.”
According to the Italian tire maker, the silica is “obtained from rice processing waste” and used in the tread compound “to ensure high performance in the wet.”
Recycled steel, it added, is “partially sourced from the melting of scrap metal instead of virgin raw materials,” while circular carbon black is recovered from end-of-life tires.
Other materials include bio-circular polymers made from “used cooking oil or pyrolysis oil” and plant-based bio-resins that help maintain the balance between wet and dry grip.
Pirelli expects to source FSC-certified natural rubber for all its European factories by 2026, as part of its broader strategy to manufacture 100% sustainable tires over the next 15 years.
According to JLR, the new tire will debut on certain 22-inch wheel options for the Range Rover before expanding across other models.
The automotive company said the project was aimed at “combining materials with reduced environmental impact without compromise on quality and performance standards.”
