Slow-down for Chinese New Year has begun
ERJ staff report (DS)
Shenzen, China - A Chinese mould maker for the plastics industry has warned that the annual slow-down in China ahead of the lunar new year has already begun.
Shenzen-based Bluestar Moulds said 99.9 percent of all Chinese manufacturing operations will be closed between 28 January and 14 February. However, the production is affected for up to two weeks either side of that period, due to travel limitations.
The company noted that many factory workers live far away from their place of work and aim to get home for the holiday period. Unfortunately, since everyone wants to travel at the same time, fares are high and places are limited. This means many people travel up to a week ahead of the holiday and companies reduce output by 50 percent or more in the week prior to the break.
Bluestar said it is rotating the holiday among its workers, so is able to complete some work throughout February.
Material supplier WestMoonInt said it and its suppliers will close down for seven days from 2 Feb - 8 Feb inclusive.
