More details on IOC-TSRC rubber plant
ERJ staff report (DS)
Panipat, India -- A few days ago, we reported on a joint venture between Indian Oil Company Ltd(IOCL), TSRC and Marubeni Corp. The proect is a 50-30-20 joint venture, with IOC taking the largest share, TSRC taking the mid share in respect of providing technology for the unit and Marubeni taking the smaller share.
As originally announced at the ground-breaking ceremony in January of this year, the project was expected to result in a 120 kt/year plant to make SBR - the first such plant in India. The more recent announcement said the project will now be expended to 200 kt/year. The plant is to be located at IOCL's petrochemical complex in Panipat and will be the only SBR plant in India when it comes on stream, probably toward the end of 2012.
The partners have selected Toyo Engineering India Ltd. to build the unit. IOCL did not say if the process will use solution or emulsion polymerisation, but noted that the rubber is used mainly in tyres, but also in other general purpose applications, suggesting it is an emulsion process. TSRC makes emulsion-SBR under the Taipol trade name. TSRC also makes BR and styrenic block co-polymers.
IOCL said the decision to set up the plant was taken IOC Board of Directors in November last year (2010).
