Global tyre markets weak in August - Pirelli

Milan, Italy -- Pirelli has updated its website with tyre sales in different regions for the month of August and the first eight months of 2012.
The company reports only percentage changes, not absolute numbers.
Pirelli said European truck tyre replacement sales fell by 24 percent in the first eight months, but the June figure was a decrease of 10 percent compared with a year ago. Cumulative OE figures also showed negative growth of 6 percent, while sales were down 3 percent in August.
OE truck tyre sales in the NAFTA region further slowed their recovery, increasing by 16 percent in the first eight months, with a decline of 3 percent in August. On the replacement side, the slowdown in sales continued, with a decline of 12 percent in the first eight months matched by a decline of 12 percent in the month of August.
Data for the Mercosur region showed OE sales down by 29 percent in the first eight months, with the August figures showing a 32-percent decline year-on-year. On the replacement side, sales fell 7 percent in the first eight months, though August sales showed a weak increase of 1 percent.
Asian data is not yet in, except for Japanese replacement sales, where the sales continue to slide. The last eight months showed an 18-percent decline, while August data showed a huge drop of 42 percent year-on-year.
In the car and light truck segment, European OE sales in the first eight months were down by 7 percent, with a decline of 12 percent in August. Replacement sales were down by 12 percent in the first eight months and down by 11 percent in August.
North American (NAFTA) sales of car and light truck tyres were mixed. On the replacement side, sales in the first eight months were down by 4 percent in last year, and down by 8 percent in August. OE figures remained positive, with sales in the first eight months up by 22 percent and in August up by 18 percent.
In the Mercosur region, replacement sales showed weak improvement in the year-to-date, with sales up 1 percent over 2011, but with a decline of 3 percent in the month of August. In OE, the first eight months figure was down by 6 percent, although August showed a slight increase, up 2 percent.
Again, Asian data was limited. Japanese replacement sales, were down by 5 percent in the year-to-date, but up by 4 percent in August.
