Bridgestone shows tyre which does not use oil-based materials
ERJ staff report (DS)
Paris - Bridgestone has shown a concept tyre of "100 percent sustainable materials" at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The tyre represents an example of Bridgestone's use of advanced materials technologies to achieve the commitment of using "100 percent sustainable materials" in its tyre manufacturing for 2050 and beyond.
The tyre uses natural rubber from hevea trees and guayule and fibres from plants. Synthetic rubber, carbon back and chemical agents were made from bio-sourced monomers. The company said it has made the tyre using butadiene synthesised from bio-ethanol. Carbon black was made by burning vegetable fats and oils while curing agents and anti-degradents were also made from biomass.
Bridgestone said the next step is to develop technologies to begin mass production. Beyond that, Bridgestone is targeting the year 2020 for commercial sales of certain sustainable materials used in the manufacturing process.
