OECD to Investigate allegations of human rights against Michelin in India
ERJ staff report (DS)
Paris - The OECD is to investigate a complaint against Michelin in India, according to five Human Rights pressure groups. The groups allege that Michelin's new truck tyre factory in Thervoy, Tamil Nadu, India contributed to the destruction of 450 hectares of forest and grabbing water, depriving local populations of their main livelihood.
The groups, CCFD-Terre Solidaire, SHERPA, the CGT, the Tamil Nadu Land Rights Federation (TNLRF) and the Association of Thervoy villagers say that the OECD has accepted that there may be a case to answer. They say Michelin had violated several OECD Guidelines for multinationals .
"The complaint is admissible even though Michelin still refuses to disclose the conflict-affected populations with the installation of its plant," said Bernard Pinaud Delegate General CCFD-Terre Solidaire.
The organisations filed the complaint in July of this year.
