Lummus to build butadiene plant for Korea’s KPIC

Houston, Texas – US engineering consulting firm Lummus Technology has been awarded a contract to build a butadiene extraction (BDE) plant for Korea Petrochemical Ind. Co. Ltd (KPIC). 

The BDE unit will be part of KPIC’s Onsan chemical plant in Ulsan, in the south east of Korea, Lummus announced 25 May.

The project scope for the award includes the technology license, basic engineering and training services. 

Once complete, the unit will produce 146 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) of butadiene, which will be used as feedstock for C4 streams and the olefins conversion unit.

Lummus did nto provide a timeline for the completion of the project.
 
Claimed to be the ‘most environmentally friendly technology’, Lummus’ BASF BDE process is based on using the n-methylpyrrolidone solvent, and involves low operating, investment and maintenance costs.
