But ACEA data shows that demand volume remained below the levels recorded in April 2019
Brussels – New car registrations surged by 218.6% year-on-year in the European Union during April, prominently due to last year’s low base of comparison.
At 862,226 units, last month’s sales volume was almost 300,000 units lower than the figure recorded in April 2019, the latest figures published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) show.
Many markets across the EU region posted double- or even triple-digit percentage gains in April, led by Italy with a 3,277% uplift year-on-year, said ACEA 19 May.
Other major markets, including Spain, France and Germany posted strong gains at 1,788%, 569% and Germany 90% respectively.
Over the four months to end of April, EU demand for passenger cars increased by 24.4% to reach 3.4 million units registered in total, with the last two months providing a substantial boost.
Italy and France posted the biggest gains of 68.4% and 51.0% respectively.
In addition, positive April results brought the cumulative performances of Spain and Germany into positive territory at 18.8% and 7.8% respectively.
