Elastomers/rubber materials under the spotlight in sportswear major’s strategy to 2025
Herzogenaurach, Germany – By 2025, nine out of ten Adidas products will be made from sustainable – recycled, ‘remade’ or natural/renewable – materials, the sportswear major has announced.
The target – from the current level of six out of ten – is part of Adidas’ plans to reduce its CO2 footprint per product by 15%, according to the company’s 10 March statement.
Adidas added that it aims to achieve climate neutrality in its own operations by 2025 and overall climate neutrality by 2050.
Adidas listed its most commonly used sustainable materials as: recycled polyester, recycled nylon, recycled rubber, algae-based EVA, water-based polyurethane, and recycled thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).
The company is working with partners in its global supply chain to reduce energy and material consumption and increase use of green energy sources.
“We source various recycled materials such as inlay soles, textiles, metals, plastics, packaging and rubber,” Adidas stated. “The companies we work with that make injected plastic plates for football boots are now recycling waste back into production.
“And they have also been able to increase the percentage of rubber and EVA that can be reground and reused in shoes.”
