Sumitomo Rubber begins remote tire monitoring trials

Kobe, Japan - Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has started proof-of-concept testing for a new remote tire pressure management technology.

The service enables tracking of tire pressure and temperature, by directly viewing TPMS data via cloud technology, the company said in a 5 Oct statement. 

Developed as part of a joint project between SRI and three other Japanese entities, the technology could reduce tire maintenance workload and contribute to safety and fuel-efficiency of tires.

Other project partners include vehicle fuel supplier company Shin-Idemitsu and its car rental subsidiary Idex Auto Japan Co.; Internet of Things specialist TripodWorks Co. and SRI tire sales subsidiary Dunlop Tyre Kyusyu.

The goal, explained SRI, is to prevent operator error in fleets and ultimately “establishing a business model that helps enhance the safety and economy of driving.”

Current testing involves introducing the service to 30 vehicles operated by Shin-Idemitsu’s vehicle leasing business and 500 vehicles operated by Idex Auto Japan as part of its vehicle rental business.

To refine the overall quality and convenience of the service, Sumitomo said it is allowing certain customers to view the latest measurement data and give feedback via a personalised customer website.

The Japanese tire maker expects the service to be of significant importance in autonomous vehicles, offering operators greater "safety and peace of mind".
