Tire maker develops technology in joint collaboration with Hyundai-Kia and Inha University in Korea
Seoul - Nexen Tire has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) and big data-based technology to reduce tire noise, the South Korean manufacturer has announced.
The company said the "prediction system" was developed through a two-year noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) research programme, said a 7 Oct statement.
The work, it added, was carried out in collaboration with Nexen’s long-time partners Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group and Inha University in Korea.
As part of the project, the tire maker set up an anechoic chamber containing dozens of microphone sensors to measure noise, analyse pass-by noise (PBN), and detect causes of noise from vehicle powertrains.
Researchers used collected data and deep learning algorithms, based on tire patterns and noise design factors, to create an AI system to both optimise tires and improve pass-by noise of cars and tires.
Based on these results and using its in-house image processing technology, Nexen said it was able to create new designs that significantly reduced noise in tires.
In addition, the company created “Korea’s first four-drum research equipment facility”, which it said is currently conducting tests with actual vehicles.
According to Nexen, the results of the braking test performance on snow, hydroplaning, and wet surfaces have been “successful”, with internal and external noise generated by cars reduced to 1 dB (decibel) and 3 dB, respectively.
Nexen said it expected the new low-noise tire technology to be used in the upcoming car models by Hyundai-Kia automotive group.
The tire maker is also looking to incorporate and expand its technology to other car manufacturers.
