Update: Hankook in link-up to develop road-risk detection system

Platform to identify hazards and report them to public transport departments
Neu-Isenburg, Germany - Hankook Tire is collaborating with Seoul-based data and test company SK Planet to develop a monitoring system that identifies potential traffic risks in real-time.
The “road risk detection solution” uses artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning technology to analyse road noise of passing cars and to identify potential risks, said Hankook in a statement 30 Sept.
The platform, according to Hankook, will identify risks such as rainfall, snow, black ice, accidents or other potential dangers and reports them to relevant public transport departments.
In a follow-up statement to ERJ on 5 Oct, Hankook said the project will involve the installation of special sensors on the road suraface to detect the noise created from tire friction.
These data will be collected by SK Planet and Hankook for further studies, the tire maker added.
To efficiently use artificial intelligence, Hankook said it will provide a wide range of different noise data to SK Planet to improve and increase the accuracy of the technology.
The data will be collected at Hankook’s test driving tracks in Geumsan, Korea, and Ivalo, Finland.
According to Hankook, the system is expected to be adapted and implemented to road traffic surveillance and control in the winter as soon as the development is complete.
SK Planet holds the patent for sound processing and the deep-learning technology that makes this solution possible.
