UK to ban sale of low-performance tires

London – The UK government is planning to ban the sale of tires that do not meet the required performance criteria under the EU regulations. 
 
The decision was made following a recent vehicle-type approval consultation, which took place ahead of the UK’s full exit from the EU on 31 Dec 
 
As part of the consultation, held 1-26 June, the Westminster government proposed to strengthen the enforcement of the legal minimum performance requirements for tires.
 
The UK department of transport has subsequently set a deadline of 1 May 2021 for the continued sale of tires that fall short of EU requirements for wet-grip, rolling-resistance and rolling-noise. 
 
There will then be a 30-month grace period for the last fitments of such tires to new vehicles and last manufacture of such tires. 
 
Sale of such tires was not previously an offence in the UK but will now be subject to the penalties, the department of transport stated.
