Truck tyre markets still suffering - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that tyre sales around the world were poor in October, but the global picture is changing.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for October 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe OE demand turned positive again, converting September's negative 9 percent growth to a 1 percent increase in October. In the year to date, the market declined by 2 percent. On the replacement side, October 2012 saw growth of 4 percent compared to the same month a year ago. This is an improvement on the year-to-date decline of -16 percent
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets have ended last year's growth trend -- the year to date has seen an increase of 6 percent, while the most recent month showed a decline of 14 percent. Replacement sales were up by 6 percent in the month of October and down by 2 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 30 percent in the month of October and fell by 33 percent in the first ten months while the decline in replacement sales was lower at -3 percent in the year to date, eased by growth of 2 percent in October.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets continued to be stronger in the Americas than in Europe. Europe showed a decline of 3 percent in the OE market for the month, taking the total fall in the first nine months to 4 percent, but the October decline was an improvement on the September figure. On the replacement side, sales in October declined by 6 percent, easing the overall decline of 9 percent in the first ten months.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 16 percent in October, keeping the ten-month growth at 18 percent. Replacement sales grew by 6 percent in October, slowing the ten-month decline to 2 percent. In Brazil, OE sales increased by 21 percent in the most recent month bringing the decline in the year to date to just 1 percent. Replacement sales were up by 7 percent in October and by 2 percent in the first ten months.
