VW, Bridgestone bid to break EV lap record
Brussels – Volkswagen Motorsport will employ Bridgestone rubber in a bid to break a notable lap record for electric vehicles (EVs) this summer.
The challenge at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife will feature an ID. R – a racing version of VW’s new ID. range of EVs to be launched in 2020.
The ID. R will sport specially adapted Bridgestone Potenza tires to help it beat the current fastest time for an EV at the German track.
“We want to underline the enormous performance potential of electric drive,” said Sven Smeets, VW Motorsport director.
With 73 corners and steep changes in elevation, the 20.8km Nordschleife is one of the world’s most challenging race tracks.
The current lap record for a purely electric-powered vehicle there is 6 minutes 45.900 seconds, added a 20 Feb Bridgestone release.
