Nokian recognised for sustainability efforts

Nokia, Finland – Nokian Tyres has received a ‘silver class’ distinction in the RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook 2019, the Finnish tire maker announced 14 Feb.

RobecoSAM carries out an annual evaluation of companies' efforts to minimise the environmental-impact of their products and activities.

Nokian, which last year received a ‘bronze’ rating, is following a sustainability-improvement plan, with several specific targets for 2020.

The tire maker, for instance, aims to reduce the rolling resistance of its tires by 7% - compared to a 2013 baseline – by next year.

This measure also will decrease CO2 emissions from traffic by 500 million kilogrammes, the company estimates.

Nokian also claims to have reduced the CO2 footprint from its production processes by 20% - again compared to 2013.

Another sustainability initiative by the Finnish group involves a test plantation for growing natural rubber-producing guayule plants in Spain.

“We are committed to long-term goals and these recognitions encourage us to keep up the good work”, said Teppo Huovila, VP quality & sustainability at Nokian Tyres.
