Milan, Italy – Pirelli supplied nearly 42,800 tires to Formula 1 teams throughout 2016, Paul Hembery, Pirelli motorsport director said in a review of the season ended 27 Nov.
This year the Italian company introduced a brand new compound – the ultrasoft – while new regulations allowed teams to use three compounds during each race.
“This extra tactical intrigue proved to be a highlight of the year,” said Hembery giving facts and figures on the 2016 results.
Throughout the year, he said, Pirelli tires completed a longer distance, at higher levels of performance, than before.
In total, 384,705km were driven on all the P Zero compounds throughout 2016, including tests, practice, qualifying and races.
By compound, the figure works out 14,236km on hard, 99,447km on medium, 133,988km on soft, 86,014km on supersoft, 31,647km on ultrasoft; 8,278km on intermediate; and 11,095km on wet compounds.
