Pirelli firms up Carlisle expansion plan
ERJ staff report (BC)
Carlisle, UK – Pirelli is applying to extend the warehouse at its Carlisle tire factory, which it says is full to capacity, reports Julian Whittle of the North West Evening Mail.
The planning application to Carlisle City Council details a 4 109 sq metre extension including four loading bays. This would increase the size of the warehouse by a third to 16 448 sq metres.
The company says the move has been prompted by increased production of sports utility vehicle tires, which take up more space than conventional tires. Truck movements to a separate off-site tire storage facility will be eliminated.
Pirelli announced last summer that it would invest £20m in its UK operations at Carlisle and Burton-on-Trent, with the lion’s share – £11.4m – going to Carlisle.
The investment is expected to secure 850 jobs and create some additional posts.
