Germany's Bluemich to receive honour at ITEC

Akron, Ohio – A German professor will receive the Harold Herzlich Distinguished Technology Achievement Award during the International Tire Exhibition and Conference for Tire Manufacturing (ITEC).

Bernhard Bluemich (pictured above), chair of macromolecular chemistry at the RWTH Aachen University in Aachen, Germany, will receive the medal during an award ceremony and banquet on 10 September in Akron, Ohio.

The award is named in honour of Harold Herzlich, a long-time tire industry veteran who also is conference chairman for ITEC and technical editor of Rubber & Plastics News.

Bluemich is known as the father of the mobile NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance). Over the past 20 years, he and his team at Aachen University have shrunk the MRI machines used in diagnostic clinical imaging to portable instruments the size of a shoebox for materials testing at the site of the object.

The best known is the NMR Magnetic Resonance Mobile Universal Surface Explorer (NMR-Mouse), which has found application among tire manufacturers as a non-destructive tire evaluation tool, giving additional engineering and chemical insights for obtaining improved durability.

Bluemich's has had more than 400 of his papers published in scientific journals.

He serves on the editorial boards of a number of scientific journals and is the associate editor of the Journal of Magnetic Resonance. He is president of the AMPERE Society.

ITEC will be held 8-10 September at the John S. Knight Center in Akron. Tickets for the award banquet are available for $65 (€48).
