Continental to employ 60 at new R&D centre in UK
Lewes, UK – Continental celebrated the opening of its new automotive research and development centre in Lewes, East Sussex on 12 Nov, announced the company.
Continental develops surround view systems which provide 360-degree detection of what is happening around a vehicle in the Lewes site. The new “Pannett’s Building” provides additional offices, meeting rooms and a workshop, as well as a show room for vehicles with surround view systems.
“With this additional building, we mark an important step in our investment in Lewes and the surround view segment,” said Karl Haupt, head of the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) business unit in the Continental chassis & safety division.
“By the end of 2014, 60 employees will be working for Continental in Lewes. The new building extends capacity beyond 90 employees at this location” Ian Saward, Managing Director for Continental in Lewes, added.
“Future surround view systems, in development today, will provide 3D views to the driver of vehicle, improving situational awareness and making driving safer and more comfortable.
“Whereas first generation systems showed the vehicle’s surroundings to the driver, future systems will warn, brake and steer if the driver does not react. From 2018 onwards, fully automated parking based on cameras can be realized,” the company’s press release added.
