ETRMA calls for urgent legislation for in-vehicle data access

Brussels – The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has joined a coalition calling for fair access to in-vehicle data in the EU.

“For the tire industry, having real-time access to in-vehicle data is first and foremost a question of safety,” explained Fazilet Cinaralp, secretary general of ETRMA.

With further automation in vehicles, “more remote, seamless and deep diagnosis will be needed” to guarantee safety, according to the ETRMA leader.

“The clock is ticking and connected mobility is no longer a dream of the future: we need a legislative action from the Commission and fast!” Cinaralp added in an ETRMA press statement.

ETRMA has, therefore, joined a coalition of after-market service providers, drivers and insurers, which wants EU lawmakers to address “urgent” issues around access to in-vehicle telematics.

In a statement, the coalition called on the European Commission to ensure a “genuine digital level-playing field for remote access to in-vehicle data.”

The coalition further called for a “robust regulatory framework for an interoperable, standardised, secure and safe on-board application platform.”

Until such platform is in place, it went on to say, there is the need to guarantee “a non-discriminatory access to the existing in-vehicle telematics systems used by vehicle manufacturers or their selected third parties.”

The call-for-action came ahead of a scheduled agreement on the EU Strategy on Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility, which is expected on 16 May.

Earlier this year, the European Parliament urged the Commission to publish a legislative proposal on access to in-vehicle data and resources.

Future prospects for smart tires will be discussed and debated at Future Tire Conference 2018, taking place 30-31 May, during the Tire Cologne international trade fair in Cologne, Germany.  Click here for more information.
