Nynas to discuss naphthenic tire oils at IRC 2016
Kitakyushu, Japan – Nynas AB will be presenting a paper on naphthenic tire oils during the International Rubber Conference (IRC 2016) to be held in Kitakyushu in Oct.
Nynas senior technical advisor, Dr Mika Lahtinen will discuss the utilisation of “multiple variable analysis tools” for optimisation of SSBR and ESBR-based tire rubber compounds.
“Naphthenic oils are known for their tendency to improve fuel economy, so there is a strong interest in introducing them more quickly into tire recipes,” Lahtinen’s paper will argue.
In earlier studies, Nynas’ researchers investigated the performance of naphthenic oils compared with that of Group I-based counterparts, i.e. DAE, TDAE and RAE. The results showed that the correct choice of low-PAH oils can significantly improve tire performance and fuel economy in particular.
In this study a new approach has been adopted, i.e. multivariate experimental design approach, to better understand the effects of key components on the properties of cured rubber.
“Compounds were prepared from both SSBR and ESBR, and it was observed that the multivariate analysis experimental design approach could be used to gain a greater understanding of final rubber properties,” said Lahtinen.
This, he added, may thus cut the development time and costs significantly.
